DEXA scan - Bone Mineral Densitometry

La Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), or bone mineral densitometry, is the reference test for evaluating bone mineral density and for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones more fragile and susceptible to the risk of fractures.

It is a quick, painless, and non-invasive test that uses an extremely low dose of radiation to accurately measure bone mineral content by comparing it with reference values for age and sex.

Machinery and districts examined

Casa di Cura Pio XI has the densitometer GE Lunar Prodigy, a state-of-the-art DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) system that guarantees accurate and reproducible measurements in a short time.

The examination is generally performed at the level of:

  • Lumbar spine
  • Proximal femur

and it is specifically indicated for post-menopausal women, for patients undergoing prolonged corticosteroid therapy, and for those with risk factors for osteoporosis, upon the recommendation of their attending physician.
