Pain Therapy and Palliative Care

What does he do?

Pain Therapy deals with the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain syndromes, both oncological and non-oncological in origin. The first step is to identify the causes and characteristics of the pain, so as to build a treatment path tailored to the individual patient’s needs. The goal is not only to reduce the symptom but also to improve the quality of life and the person’s functionality, helping them to resume normal daily activities.

What pains we treat

At Casa di Cura Pio XI, patients with pain of oncological and non-oncological origin are treated. Among the conditions treated:

  • oncological pain, to control symptoms and support quality of life during the illness
  • lumbago, sciatica and cervicalgia
  • arthritic pain
  • headache
  • neuropathic pain, such as post-herpetic neuralgia (pain that may persist after herpes zoster) and other peripheral neuropathies, related to nerve involvement or damage
  • Generalized pain and fibromyalgia syndromes

How we treat pain

After the specialist visit, the treatment is defined on a case-by-case basis, either in outpatient or inpatient settings. Pharmacological therapy is complemented, when necessary, by minimally invasive procedures performed using ultrasound guidance, which allows for more precise and safe access to the site of pain. These include:

  • guided endoscopic infiltration treatments
  • Peripheral neuromodulation with radiofrequency or PENS (Percutaneous Nerve Electrical Stimulation)
