Casa di Cura Pio XI

Our model of care

un Approccio medico e assistenziale integrale

In the IRSJG socio-health centers — hospitals, nursing homes, geriatric centers, hospices — a model of comprehensive healthcare is shared: Medical excellence & humanization of care.

The mission translates the charism of the founding mother Maria Gay into modern medical practice: «to relieve the pain» today it is ensuring medical excellence and the customization of advanced medical protocols; «Sowing peace» It is to humanize assistance, to ensure attention, listening, and accompaniment.

The Founder

Maria Gay Tibau, fondatrice dell’Istituto

Maria Gay i Tibau

The story of a vocation born from care

The vocation of Maria Gay i Tibau It stems from daily encounters with suffering. In Girona, after his mother’s death, for about twenty years he lived in contact with sick people, learning to recognize the fragility of others as a call to care.

He thus decides to dedicate his life to those who suffer, accompanying the sick and supporting their families.

The 29 June 1870, Together with Carmen Esteve Andoca, he is holding the first wake-up at home. It is a simple and profoundly innovative gesture: enter people's homes, be close to those who suffer, and transform care into a human and concrete presence.

From this intuition the idea of the’Institute of Religious Women of San Giuseppe of Girona (IRSJG), A community called to bring care where it was most needed, in homes, in hospitals, and alongside those in need.

Maria Gay's vision is surprisingly modern: put the person at the center, transform fragility into relationship, and make care a concrete gesture of humanity.

His legacy is not just a story to be remembered, but a way of being and acting in the present: welcoming, accompanying, caring for, and sowing peace.

One woman, one vision, one mission still relevant today

Vision

True care stems from the sensitivity and expertise of those who dedicate themselves to the patient every day. For this reason, we support a community of doctors and healthcare workers who work as a team, valuing individual skills and recognizing their high human and social value.

It is a path that combines continuous training with the use of the most advanced technologies, to offer attentive and high-level care. The scientific treatment of the condition and human attention to the person are not two distinct phases, but a single way of working.

Mission and Social Works

The mission of Casa di Cura Pio XI is based on the original idea of the Institute of the Religious Sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona: to offer a’global assistance, capable of caring for the person as a whole, combining physical health with attention to the emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions.

For us, healing does not merely mean treating a pathology, but embracing the human being in their entirety, with respect for their dignity and values.

From personal care to solidarity around the world

The Clinic's commitment does not end within its walls. The activities of the Institute's Nursing Homes contribute, together with private donations, to supporting the Peace Fund, intended to finance assistance and development projects, predominantly in Africa and South America.

Respect

Consistency and prudence

We recognize the inviolable dignity of every person, always acting with consistency, ethics, and prudence. We safeguard confidentiality with the utmost rigor, never taking advantage of the vulnerability of others.

Service, Hospitality, Respect and Humility converge in a single objective: humanize care, combining professional expertise with listening, kindness, and a constant presence alongside the patient.

The Health Pastoral

The Institute's mission looks at the person in their entirety. For this reason, alongside physical care and social support, there is also room for human and spiritual accompaniment, with special attention to times of illness, fragility, and difficulty.

Health, assistance, education, volunteering, and pastoral care are different expressions of the same mission: caring for people and communities, especially where the need is greatest.
